Rep. Elijah Cummings endorses Clinton

Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings endorsed Sunday Hillary Clinton Sunday giving Clinton a boost before the state’s Democratic primary after the Congressman held off on backing the Democratic front-runner.

“I know Hillary Clinton. I knew her as first lady when she and her husband Bill Clinton led our nation to peace and prosperity,” Cummings said at a Baltimore rally Sunday.

Every member of the Maryland congressional delegation has now endorsed Clinton. Cummings, who represents Baltimore, is a leading voice in the African-American community. His support should help Clinton ward off a late charge from rival Bernie Sanders, who has won 8 of the last 9 states, but still firmly trails in the delegate count.

Clinton hopes to knock out Sanders with wins in eastern states that favor her. Those include New York, which votes April 19, and Maryland, which holds its primary on April 26.

Cummings considered a run for Senate in 2016, but opted not to enter a brutal primary against Rep. Chris Van Hollen, a member of House Democratic leadership, and Rep. Donna Edwards.
