Ben Carson has raised $5.9 million from 113,000 separate donations since March 3, his campaign confirmed to the Washington Examiner on Monday.
The Republican presidential candidate formally kicked off his White House bid in Detroit on May 4.
The retired pediatric neurosurgeon has never run for office before but developed a strong grassroots following in the months leading up to his official launch. His nearly $6 million raised at an average of $54 per contribution amounts to a solid start for a non-traditional politician without an existing political network or high name identification.
But it still amounts to a less impressive beginning than other Republicans vying for the support of conservative GOP primary voters. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who entered the presidential race with questions about his fundraising prowess, brought in $1 million in his first day on the trail and $4 million during his first eight days.
A spokeswoman for Carly Fiorina, another Washington outsider who announced her 2016 bid the same day as Carson, declined to reveal how much money the former Hewlett Packard CEO has raised since entering the race for the GOP presidential nomination.
