Donald Trump took aim at Ted Cruz during a campaign speech in Iowa on Wednesday, claiming that the GOP senator was “running with a cloud over his head,” just like Hillary Clinton, and saying Cruz is in some ways worse than Clinton when it comes to being honest.
Trump indicated that it’s hard to believe Cruz can’t foresee possible questions about his U.S. citizenship status, and said Cruz’s explanations of that issue are worse that Clinton’s explanation for her private email system.

“Smart guy? He didn’t know that?” Trump said in reference to Cruz’s U.S. citizenship. “That’s worse than Hillary.”
“He takes ads and says things about me that are so wrong, so we have to disclose the real facts,” Trump added.
On the campaign trail, Trump has previously praised Cruz as a friend and consistently bashed Hillary Clinton as a liar and a bad politician. But Trump has raised questions publicly about Cruz’s citizenship just weeks before the Iowa caucuses, as Cruz has surged in the polls.
Cruz has said there is no legal issue, as he was born in Canada but has an American mother, which makes him an American citizen. But Trump warned again on Wednesday that Democrats were likely to challenge that in court if Cruz becomes the GOP nominee.
“The Democrats will sue,” Trump contended.”They’ll take their time, but just like you’re standing here the Democrats are going to sue.”
“A lot of people say he’s not allowed to run for president because he wasn’t born on the land,” Trump said of Cruz. “Honestly, Ted has a problem because what if you have him as a candidate and he wins all of a sudden then he’s not a candidate, or the courts say he’s not allowed to run?”
He added, “Hillary is running with a cloud over her head too. What she’s done is unbelievable and she’s getting away with it. They’re protecting her and they’re continuing to protect it.”
