Shots fired near National Guard training center, no soldiers injured

Shots were fired Tuesday near a National Guard training center in Mississippi that is hosting parts of the Jade Helm exercise, according to a statement from the Mississippi National Guard.

No soldiers were injured and all personnel are accounted for, according to the statement.

“At approximately 11:45 a.m. today, soldiers training at the Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center reported shots fired along Peret Tower Road, near the south Mississippi training post,” the statement said.

Two gunmen in a pickup truck allegedly drove by the base while soldiers were participating in an exercise and fired shots, according to reports from The Clarion-Ledger.

More than 1,000 personnel are taking part in Jade Helm, which is being held at bases across the southern U.S. in Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Texas and Utah, according to a Military Times report.

The exercise, designed to increase the capabilities of special operators, sparked controversy among some conspiracy theorists, who believed the military was preparing for war on Americans.

Camp Shelby also serves as a training site for reservists and active-duty Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force, according to its website.

The incident comes just two weeks after five service members died in a shooting at a recruiting center at a naval reserve center in Chattanooga, Tenn., leading the Defense Department to review security at military facilities that are not on bases.

Some members of Congress said the incident showed why service members should be allowed to carry personal firearms for protection.
