Republican voters unhappy with handling of key issues

A majority of Republicans are unhappy with how the party represents some major issues, according to a new Pew Research Center study.

Pew polled more than 2,000 adults in early September and found more Republicans say their party is not doing a good job on government spending, same-sex marriage and illegal immigration. Republicans respondents were about split in their views of the party when it comes to abortion.

Pew followed up with the dissatisfied Republicans and found that among the 60 percent who feel the party is not doing a good job when it comes to government spending, 48 percent said they believe the GOP is too liberal.

When it comes to same-sex marriage, 53 percent of Republicans said they were dissatisfied with the GOP, with 28 percent calling the party too conservative and 22 percent saying it is too liberal on the issue.

Republicans want their party to take a more conservative approach when it comes to Illegal immigration, with 33 percent of the dissatisfied saying the party is too liberal and just 18 percent saying it is too conservative. Overall, 56 percent of Republicans said the party is not doing a good job when it comes to handling illegal immigration issues.

Democrats fared much better among those who align themselves with the party. Pew found that 6 out of 10 people said the party is doing a good job representing their views on the big issues.

According to the survey, 49 percent of Democrats like how the party has handled government spending, 61 percent say they are doing a good job on issues concerning abortion, and 62 percent like the party’s handling of same-sex marriage.

On immigration, 47 percent approved of the party, 44 percent said they did not approve of how Democrats handle the issue.
