A White House staffer has been charged with domestic violence after threatening her boyfriend, a U.S. Capitol Police officer, with his own weapon during an argument.
Barvetta Singletary sent her boyfriend a text on Friday asking him to come to her Upper Marlboro home for sex, according to charging documents. After they had sex, Singletary confronted him about other women he was allegedly dating.
They both went to his car after she asked him to step outside. According to police, once inside the car, Singletary asked to see his two cellphones. When he refused, she reached into his bag and took out both phones, as well as his .40 caliber Glock 23 service weapon.
Singletary ran back into her house. Her boyfriend followed, pleading with her to return the weapon. Police say she demanded he give her the passwords to the phones, but he refused. Singletary pulled the gun out of its holster and pointed it at him, saying, “You taught me how to use this. Don’t think I won’t use it.”
After Singletary’s boyfriend refused to give her the passwords, she said, “Your phone is more important than me holding the gun on you.”
Singletary fired one round in the victim’s direction, police say. He then ran away from the home, fearing for his life. He saw Singletary wipe the gun down with a towel before calling 911.
Singletary was arrested at the scene without incident.
Singletary is currently a Special Assistant to the President and House Legislative Affairs Liaison. According to a White House spokesperson, Singletary has been placed on unpaid leave and her access to the White House complex has been revoked until they have more information.
