The Secret Service is beefing up surveillance and protection of the White House grounds after a man managed to jump the North Lawn fence and sprint inside the mansion.
In a statement, Secret Service spokesman Douglas Stone said there will be a “comprehensive review” of the response to the intruder, a man they have identified as Omar J. Gonzalez, 42, of Copperas Cove, Texas.
In addition, Stone said, Secret Service Director Julia Pierson has ordered the “immediate enhancement of officer patrols and surveillance capabilities along the Pennsylvania Avenue fence line around the White House complex.”
The Secret Service has been the subject of criticism over the incident.
Gonzalez, Stone said, “failed to comply with responding Secret Service Uniformed Division Officers’ verbal commands, and was physically apprehended after entering the White House North Portico doors.”
Gonzalez was not armed, and neither President Obama nor his family was in the residence at the time of the incident.
