Eager to tie the Senate GOP to Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump, the number-three Senate Democrat said Friday that Trump and the GOP “share the same agenda,” and are making sure Trump is president so he can pick the next Supreme Court justice.
Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., issued a statement after Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, told a Texas radio station, “If Mr. Trump does become the president of the United States, he’s going to need a Republican majority to govern, and I think he would welcome working with Republican majorities in the House and the Senate to move his and the country’s agenda forward.”
Schumer said Trump would ensure Republicans lose the Senate majority in November.
Republicans have expressed concern that Trump’s campaign style and low approval ratings would hurt Senate GOP candidates.
Democrats are gleeful about the prospect of Trump headlining the ballot.
“Ironically, Senator Cornyn has committed a gaffe by telling the truth,” Schumer said. “Donald Trump and Senate Republicans share the same agenda, and Senate Republicans who are obstructing on the Supreme Court are doing everything they can‎ to make sure that Trump chooses the next justice. Donald Trump won’t make America Great Again, but he will make Republicans the minority again.”
