Report: Rubio’s fumbled attempt to court Christie

Marco Rubio attempted to win Chris Christie’s endorsement after dropping out of the presidential race, a new report says.

It did not go well.

Rubio left the governor a voice mail message “seeking Mr. Christie’s support and assuring him that he had a bright future in public service,” a New York Times report Saturday said. “Mr. Christie, 53, took the message as deeply disrespectful and patronizing, questioning why ‘a 44-year-old’ was telling him about his future.”

Christie’s ire, and courting by Trump, contributed to the New Jersey Governor’s bombshell endorsement of Trump Friday, according to the report.

Christie dropped out of the presidential contest after placing poorly in New Hampshire. But he managed a brutal debate stage takedown of Rubio, successfully mocking the senator for heavy reliance on talking points and memorized “30-second speeches.”

Rubio’s lack of finesse in his outreach to Christie contrasted with Trump’s approach.

Trump “made frequent calls to Mr. Christie once he dropped out, a person close to the governor said. After the two met at Trump Tower on Thursday with their wives, Mr. Christie flew to Texas and emerged on Friday to back Mr. Trump and mock Mr. Rubio as a desperate candidate near the end of a losing campaign,” the report says.
