The conservative Wall Street Journal editorial board hit Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton for their respective responses to the Orlando shooting, saying that neither has offered clarity on how they would confront radical Islamic terrorism.
“Mr. Trump’s remarks, on various TV shows and in a speech in New Hampshire Monday, gave little evidence he has talked to anyone in the intelligence or foreign-policy communities about the substantive details of addressing the threat,” the paper said Tuesday.
Likewise, the Journal said of Clinton, “More than anything, she used the occasion as a political opportunity to define her opponent as a divider and herself as a bipartisan unifier against ‘all those who hate.’ ”
Trump and Clinton offered contrasting views Monday on the attack, wherein a shooter opened fire in a gay nightclub, killing 49 and wounding scores more.
Trump renewed his call for a “temporary ban” on all foreign Muslims from entering the country, and said the U.S. should be more aggressive fighting terrorism abroad.
Clinton spent more of her efforts on calling for increased federal regulation on guns, though she also said the U.S. should expand its fight against extremism.
“The American people,” the Journal said, “have about five months to be given a better idea than they have now of what Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton will do about it.”
