White House reporters nearly stranded with broken tire while covering Obama

A few White House reporters were separated from President Obama’s motorcade in Hawaii after a tire on the press van nearly separated from the vehicle.

The press van following Obama around while he continued his holiday Tuesday was forced to stop, leaving Michael Memoli, White House reporter for the Los Angeles Times, and other reporters to wait for another mode of transportation.

“At about 5:27 p.m., the [press] van driving in the motorcade blew a tire during the drive along Kalanianaole Highway just past Waimanalo,” Memoli wrote in a report.

Memoli wrote that Obama continued on without the press, en route to his vacation residence, while the reporters waited on another vehicle to pick them up.

Memoli followed up in another report that the tire was not flat but that it had become dislodged from the van. The incident occurred after the press was on its way from a location where Obama, his daughter Malia and some of her friends were hiking.

“I’m not sure what ended up happening with the van we were in,” Memoli told the Washington Examiner. “About 45 minutes or so after it broke down the tour company that operates that van had another one out to pick us up.”
