Border Patrol officials in Arizona say drug smugglers are starting to use drones to bring drugs into the U.S. from the southern U.S. border.
“The Yuma Sector Border Patrol has recently encountered small remote controlled aircraft, commonly referred to as drones, being used to smuggle drugs into the United States,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Wednesday.
“The drones vary in size, but are commonly between 2 to 4 feet wide,” it said.
Officials said they are seeing these drones “primarily in the San Luis area.”
“They are known to carry illegal contraband into the U.S. where it is dropped and picked up by smugglers north of the border,” the agency added.
U.S. border officials have been waging a war on contraband for years at the border, and frequently report the seizure of drugs that are hidden in cars, luggage and on the bodies of people coming across the border.
