Christie picks up influential N.H. endorsement

The New Hampshire Union Leader, known for a conservative editorial bent, delivered a much-needed boost to Chris Christie’s campaign for president late Saturday night in the form of an endorsement from the paper’s publisher in the Sunday edition.

“The one reason he may be best-suited to lead during these times is because he tells it like it is and isn’t shy about it,” Joseph W. McQuaid writes in an editorial entitled “For our safety, our future: Chris Christie for President.”

“We don’t need another fast-talking, well-meaning freshman U.S. senator trying to run the government. We are still seeing the disastrous effects of the last such choice,” McQuaid says in a shot at Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul.

“Other candidates have gained public and media attention by speaking bluntly. But it’s important when you are telling it like it is to actually know what you are talking about,” he continues, laying into Donald Trump without naming him.

New Hampshire is set to vote in early February, and with its recent history of elevating members of the more moderate and establishment wings of the Republican Party, a win in the state would likely serve as the lynchpin of any potential Christie path to the nomination.
