“Project Runway’s” Tim Gunn had some kind words for Hillary Clinton at Wednesday night’s Capitol File party at the Corcoran, but not regarding pantsuits. (We didn’t go there).
Instead, he applauded her for joining the growing list of bold-faced names, including Gunn himself, who have filmed public service announcements telling GLBT youth that “it gets better,” following the handful of recent teen suicides.
“Well, my hat’s off to the secretary of state,” he said. “Thank you, Mrs. Clinton. It took a lot of courage and also a lot of belief in how bad these issues are,” he added, saying he hadn’t seen her video yet.
Gunn’s own PSA was highly personal. For the first time, he publicly discussed his own attempted suicide at the age of 17.
“What inspired me was wanting to help young people who were suffering so badly that they’d want to take their own life,” he told Yeas & Nays “I was once one of those young people.”
And while he appreciated Clinton for coming out on this issue, he pointed out that in many states one can still be fired for being gay.
“Until we fix that,” he asked, “how can we fix anything else?”
Gunn, a native Washingtonian, was in town to celebrate Capitol File magazine’s fifth anniversary. He appeared on this month’s cover of the magazine.
