Poll: Americans want GOP handling top issues

With less than four weeks to go until the midterm elections, voters are more inclined to want the GOP to handle top issues.

Voters prefer the Republican Party on four of the six top election issues and Democrats on just one, according to a new Gallup poll.

Republicans have the upper hand on dealing with: the economy, the way the federal government is working, the situation with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and the federal budget deficit.

What important issue to Democrats win on? Equal pay for women, according to Gallup.

Furthermore, on the No. 1 issue — the economy — Republicans have more than doubled their April lead over Democrats to 11 percentage points.

Democrats top Republicans on five issues, though they are ranked of lesser importance: immigration, Obamacare, income and wealth distribution in the U.S., abortion and access to contraception and climate change.

The poll of 1,095 registered voters was conducted via telephone interviews Sept. 25-30 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
