Palestinians chide ‘extreme’ Israel to Kerry

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas thanked Secretary of State John Kerry for meeting him in Amman, Jordan Saturday, but also used the occasion to inveigh against Israel.

“We welcome Mr. Kerry’s efforts, however, a bandage and painkillers will not treat the illness. What will is ending the occupation, colonization, settler violence and the adverse policies by the most extreme Israeli government,” Husam Zumlot, a senior aide to Abbas, said.

Kerry met with Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu Thursday in Berlin, where Netanyahu expressed similar disapproval of the Palestinians.

At issue in Abbas’ meeting with Kerry was the status of holy cites in the Israel and Palestinian territories, th
e Wall Street Journal reports. Fresh disputes have broken out in the conflict over the past month, with bloodshed on both sides.

Kerry and Jordan’s government brokered an apparent deal between Abbas and Netanyahu, whereby Netanyahu will deliver an address to the Israeli people Saturday evening.

“Now, I hope that based on these conversations we can finally put to rest some of the false assumptions, perceptions about the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount. Those perceptions are stoking the tensions and fueling the violence,” Kerry said.

Netanyahu will state the location still belongs to the Palestinian people.
