The ladies of the Washington press corps may have bested their colleagues in Congress at the second annual Congressional Women’s Softball game Wednesday night, but somehow Speaker Nancy Pelosi still came out on top.
“I’m gonna go buy raffle tickets,” Pelosi, who wasn’t playing in the game, said. Shortly thereafter she was the winner of her very own black and pink softball mitt.
The game pitted women from Congress against female reporters and ended with the Capitol Hill Women’s Press Corps coming from behind to win 13-7.
Pelosi tried to stay semineutral.
“They’re all my favorite players,” Pelosi said with a laugh, “I wouldn’t even think of going there,” adding that she meant both the press and Congress.
Spectators included Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, House Minority Leader Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md.
Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, was there cheering on his daughter Jackie Kucinich, who writes for Roll Call, but wasn’t going to test his luck in the raffle.
“I never compete against the speaker,” Kucinich said.
