Sen. Elizabeth Warren: Negotiated deal with Iran is only option

Sen. Elizabeth Warren said those who question bringing Iran to the negotiating table over its nuclear program have no better solution of their own.

“It’s critically important that Iran not have a nuclear weapon,” the Massachusetts Democrat said. But “what’s the alternative here? What have you got for the next best move?”

In an interview with the HuffPost Show — where the host said the website’s writers referred to Warren uniformly as “my hero” — she said she was “cautiously hopeful” that the deal worked out by the Obama administration, along with other powers, would work.

“Finding a negotiated solution, something that doesn’t involve trusting, that involves veryifying that Iran is not moving towards a nuclear weapon, that is our best promise in the region.”

Asked whether the Senate had a role to play, she said that “the president has the authority to work with those sanctions,” though the Senate would eventually play a role.

“We saw sanctions really worked,” she said. “We learn through this experience that economic sanctions not just from the United States but from all around the world, to say we agree Iran should not have nuclear weapons … that’s what brought Iran to the negotiating table.”

In his weekly address Saturday, however, President Obama himself seemed to question the efficacy of certain sanctions, saying that they have “always led to Iran making more progress in its nuclear program.”
