‘Hail Trump!’: Alt-right leader inspires Nazi-style salutes

A prominent alt-right leader gave a toast in Washington DC Saturday that drew approving Nazi-style salutes from several conferencegoers.

“Hail Trump! Hail our people! Hail victory!” boomed Richard Spencer, popularizer of the term “alt-right” to describe white nationalists, at a National Policy Institute gathering in the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center.

Spencer then extended his right arm with a glass to toast that victory. Most members of the audience cheered. Perhaps half a dozen took it one step further.

They can be seen in a video excerpt of a forthcoming documentary extending their right arms and palms instead in unmistakable Nazi-style salutes.

“For most of the day, a parade of speakers” at the annual NPI conference, reported the Atlantic, “discussed their ideology in relatively anodyne terms, putting a presentable face on their agenda.

However: “[A]fter dinner, when most journalists had already departed, Spencer rose and delivered a speech to his followers dripping with anti-Semitism, and leaving no doubt as to what he actually seeks.”

On the subject of white Americans, Spencer appeared to channel his inner Nietzsche.

“We are not meant to live in shame and weakness and disgrace. We were not meant to beg for moral validation from some of the most despicable creatures to ever populate the planet,” Spencer said.

“We were meant to overcome — overcome all of it — because that is natural and normal for us!”
