If there’s something vaguely familiar about newly-minted International Monetary Fund head Christine Lagarde, it could be that she — well, an actress portraying her — makes a brief appearance in the HBO movie “Too Big To Fail.”
Actress Laila Robins, as then French Finance Minister Lagarde, chews out Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, played by William Hurt, for letting Lehman Brothers fail.
“How could you let this happen with Lehman? What on earth were you thinking?” she snipes at Paulson, urging him to take action to save insurance giant AIG. “It was a horrifying mistake. It will have catastrophic consequences all over Europe. AIG would be even worse. European banks have tremendous exposure to AIG. We need assurance you will not fail to act like you did with Lehman. This is not just an American problem,” her rant continues.
The film was based on New York Times reporter Andrew Ross Sorkin‘s book, which detailed the 2008 financial crisis, and debuted last month on HBO.
