“This is the opening night and closing night,” said Michael Kahn, creative director of the Shakespeare Theatre Co., Monday night, as he introduced the company’s 16th annual “Will on the Hill” fundraiser featuring members of Congress and other VIP performers.

“For those of you who are here, thank you for not being across the street,” he added, acknowledging the Capitals game, which took place at the same time.

Herewith, a sample of the lines penned for the occasion by playwright Peter Byrne:

-Rep. Brian Baird, portraying a “classical liberal”: “School vouchers cause cancer.”

-Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, after discussing “dating” with her “father,” Rep. Jim McDermott: “I’m going out shopping for a purity ring.”

-Rep. Donna Edwards, playing a radical environmentalist: “What I lack in social skills I make up for in smug self righteousness.”

-Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, after her “son” gains an independent streak: “We should never have sent him to that stupid Montessori school.”
