Leaders of the Montgomery and Prince George’s county governments will take the oath of office this morning, as will the county councils.
Ike Leggett will become Montgomery’s first black county executive during a ceremony at The Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda.
Jack Johnson will be sworn in as Prince George’s county executive at the Showplace Arena on Pennsylvania Avenue in Upper Marlboro.
Both ceremonies, which will include the county councils, are open to the public.
Johnson, who had no general-election opponent in November after surviving a primary challenge, will be starting his second and final four-year term.
Leggett captured 67 percent of the vote in November to win his first four-year term as executive after 16 years on Montgomery County Council. He replaces Doug Duncan, who had served three terms as county executive.
In preparation for taking office today, Leggett assembled a group of 120 people to help him address the issues most important to the county.
Leggett has been busy assembling his county staff. Last week he announced he would not retain 17 of Duncan’s appointees, but he did decide to keep nine department heads. He also announced last week that he had selected veteran county employee Tim Firestine to be his chief administrative officer.
Later today, during a 6 p.m. ceremony, the nine-member Prince George’s County School Board will be sworn in at the board’s office building in Upper Marlboro.
Prince George’s voters chose from 18 candidates on the ballot, plus several write-in hopefuls, to elect the board. The new officials replace a board that was appointed after the Maryland Legislature dissolved the last elected board in 2002.
