Jose Andres gets local

Voting rights and bites

Just because famed Spanish chef Jose Andres isn’t a D.C. resident doesn’t mean that he’s not passionate about local issues (having five restaurants here —  Jaleo, minibar, Zaytinya, Oyamel and Café Atlantico — helps).

Andres was at Café Atlantico Monday night to celebrate his latest book, “Made in Spain: Spanish Dishes for the American Kitchen,” co-authored with Newsweek’s Richard Wolffe. And, during his remarks to the gathered masses, he couldn’t avoid a not-so-subtle dig at D.C.’s lack of voting rights (and a plug for his future business endeavors): “One day, we’ll be in a place where our vote counts — Maryland and Virginia!” said Andres. But while you may need to wait to spot Andres in D.C.’s neighboring states, he invited everyone to, well, crash his home.

“You know my address, you know where I live. Come by and I’ll open a bottle of wine for you and I will sign a book for you,” said Andres. “But not tonight. I’m not signing books tonight. I want to enjoy my time with my friends and my food.”
