Ricky Martin endorses Hillary Clinton

Singer Ricky Martin officially endorsed Hillary Clinton for president Wednesday.

The singer tweeted out his presidential preference, calling the former secretary of state “a Latina at heart.”

The Puerto Rican pop star spoke to BuzzFeed news earlier Wednesday, hinting that an endorsement was coming.

“Our community has been continuously attacked by Donald Trump and other Republican presidential candidates,” Martin said. “A few months ago I raised my voice against Trump’s hateful rhetoric and standing with me was Hillary Clinton. Time after time, Hillary has shown her commitment to the Latino community and that is why I’m proud to support her and to stand with her because ella esta con nosotros y nuestras familias.”

The last part of that quote translates to, “she is with us and our families.”

He was referring to Donald Trump’s anti-immigration rhetoric when he launched his campaign in July, and an op-ed the singer wrote for Univision in August saying Trump’s comments were “anchored in a low xenophobic rhetoric and speech that his campaign appears convinced … works.”

Martin’s endorsement comes as Clinton heads down to Florida for campaign stops to woo Puerto Rican voters in Tampa Bay, Orlando, Jacksonville and Miami, areas with significant Latino populations.

Orlando has the second largest Puerto Rican population in the mainland United States and as Clinton tries to mobilize the Latino vote she also emphasized her support for Puerto Rican statehood.
