John Kerry to meet with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Sergey Larvov Tuesday

United States Secretary of State John Kerry will reportedly meet with Russian leaders Tuesday.

Kerry will travel to Sochi Tuesday to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, where they will talk about ongoing unrest in Ukraine, Syria and Yemen, Russian news agency RIA-Novosti reported Monday. According to a diplomatic source, the Kremlin is hopeful Kerry will bring new proposals on reaching a settlement in Ukraine.

Another unnamed official reportedly told Interfax news agency that the issue of U.S. military assistance to Ukraine would be discussed.

Kerry has made it clear for months that he would like to go to Russia. He last visited in May 2013.

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf confirmed Monday morning that Kerry will also meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A conflict between the Ukrainian government forces and Russian-backed separatists began in April 2014 — undoubtedly an important issue for the two foreign ministers to discuss. Since then, Ukraine says more than 8,000 people have died in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions. There has been a ceasefire in place since mid-February.
