Top al Qaeda terrorist killed in Pakistan

The Pakistani army said Saturday it killed one of the top al Qaeda leaders wanted by the U.S. in a shootout earlier that day in the tribal area of South Waziristan near the Afghan border.

Adnan el-Shukrijumah, 39, was indicted by a federal grand jury in 2010 in connection with a plot to attack the New York subway system and other targets in the United States and Britain.

A $5 million reward had been posted for his capture.

Though born in Saudi Arabia, Shukrijumah grew up in the United States and has been considered for years one of al Qaeda’s most dangerous operatives because of his training and knowledge of English.

He had previously been implicated in several terrorist plots against the United States, including one involving convicted U.S.-born terrorist Jose Padilla.
