Man arrested in Chicago for trying to join Islamic State

A Wisconsin man has been arrested on charges of planning to join the Islamic State.

Joshua Ray Van Haften, 34, of Madison, Wisc., has been charged with attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State. Van Haften was also intent on traveling to Syria via Turkey to join the terrorist group, according to the Justice Department.

The FBI also tracked his online activities, which showed his sympathized with the Islamic State and was eager to join the fight.

Van Haften was arrested at O’Hare Airport in Chicago Wednesday afternoon after his arrival on an international flight from Turkey.

He is scheduled to appear in federal prison in Wisconsin Thursday morning and faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison if convicted.
