Boehner lukewarm on Romney presidential run

House Speaker John Boehner, who has publicly declared his support for a Jeb Bush presidential run, was hardly enthusiastic about the idea of former GOP nominee Mitt Romney jumping into the race.

“We’ll let him make that decision,” the Ohio Republican said when asked Tuesday about a potential Romney candidacy. “Other candidates will be making announcements in the coming months, I expect. It’s a very open process. May the best person win.”

Romney has been reaching out to donors and former advisors about running for president for a third time. Bush is also weighing whether to run.

Boehner is normally quiet when it comes to presidential politics, but has openly thrown support behind Bush, the former Florida governor.

Boehner told the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce in May 2014 that he was trying to convince Bush to run for president, though he said it was “way too early” to pick a top GOP presidential candidate. “We’ve got a lot of good candidates out there, and yes, Jeb Bush is my friend, I think he’d make a great president,” Boehner said at the time. “And I’ve been nudging him for some time.”
