President Obama addressed the Washington press corps and assorted celebrities Saturday night at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and few escaped the president’s zingers. “It’s great to be in the vast, magnificent Hilton ballroom— or what Mitt Romney would call a little fixer-upper,” he said.
The Secret Service, GSA, and his own secretary of state took jabs: “Four years ago, I was locked in a brutal primary battle with Hillary Clinton. Four years later, she won’t stop drunk-texting me from Cartagena.”
Dog jokes abounded, with Obama repurposing Sarah Palin’s old campaign line. “What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull?” he said. “A pit bull is delicious.”
Jimmy Kimmel followed the president with a set that took a gentle shot at first lady Michelle Obama. “They say diplomacy is a matter of carrot and sticks,” he said, “and since Michelle Obama got to the White House — so is dinner.”
Kimmel pointed out New Jersey governor Chris Christie to the first lady, who has championed healthy eating. “Look, it’s Chris Christie” he said. “Get him!”
To Christie, he added: “I think you’re misunderstanding New Jersey’s slogan. It’s not the Olive Garden state.”
