Ads push back against birth-control argument

Planned Parenthood is upping its opposition to Republicans now arguing for over-the-counter contraception, this time with television spots.

The two ads — which separately attack GOP Senate candidates Cory Gardner of Colorado and Thom Tillis of North Carolina — differ only by the name, but push the same message.

“Just when insurance is finally covering the cost of prescription birth control — Cory Gardner says no,” a female voice says.

Text then pops up saying “Gardner’s over-the-counter proposal would take away insurance coverage for birth control,” referring to the candidate’s push to make OTC birth control accessible without a prescription. Tillis revealed his support of the idea a few days after Gardner.

The policy change proposed by Republicans would “force women to go back to the days when they paid out of pocket for birth control — which can cost upwards of $600 a year,” Planned Parenthood Action Fund wrote on its website last week.
