Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz took to Twitter to criticize the Republicans for holding a debate Saturday night — and it immediately backfired.
“Hmmm, wondering why @GOP trying to hide their #GOPdebate on the Saturday of #SuperBowl weekend no less?!” the Florida congresswoman tweeted, hours before ABC’s GOP presidential debate.

It wasn’t clear if the DNC Chair was attempting irony. Wasserman Schultz has faced prior criticism for putting Democratic presidential debates around weekends and holidays. Critics argue DNC’s intend was to limit viewership in a bid to help front-runner Hillary Clinton.
@DWStweets Look, I’m all about Hillary, but this tweet shows a remarkable lack of self-awareness.

Seriously, @DWStweets, someone had to have hacked your account, right? Nobody is that self-unaware. @GOP

.@DWStweets @GOP that might be funny if, you know, everything were the opposite of what it is.

Amid extensive reaction to her tweet, Wasserman Schultz suggested she had meant that the GOP was guilty of the same scheduling for which she’s been faulted.
Democrats’ debates “set viewer records,” she tweeted. “Both parties’ broadcast network debates on wknds. Replies to SuperBowl #GOPdebate make my point.”
Saturday’s debate comes just a few days until the first-in-the-nation primary in New Hampshire.
