Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton said that she believes Donald Trump’s campaign can go on for a long time, and for that, “more power to him,” she said during an interview with the “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon.
His campaign “will go on as long as he wants it to go on,” Clinton said. She went on to argue that one of the best parts of America is that anyone over 35 can run for the presidency.
While Trump and Clinton are opponents on either side of the aisle in the primary, the two used to be friends and political allies, as Trump donated to the Clinton foundation and Clinton attended Trump’s wedding. Prior to Donald Trump’s run for the Republican nomination, Bill Clinton called the business tycoon to council him on his political run.
Due to their previous ties, some believe that the Clintons encouraged Trump to run in order to worsen the GOP’s image and bolster Clinton.
In addition to promoting Trump’s candidacy, she made fun of his policies as well as his hair, during a skit where Clinton pretended to speak on the phone with Trump. But for all the jokes she made at others, Clinton’s only jokes towards herself had to do with her email scandal, which her campaign vowed she would no longer joke about.
Ever since the Clinton campaign launched their new strategy of appearing more “fun and “spontaneous” in August, the former secretary of state has gone out of her way to appear less serious, but her attempts at lighthearted humor seemed to fall short on Fallon. When Fallon, acting as Trump, asked her humorous questions and Clinton responded with a formulaic response about her campaign policies.
“You sound like a robot. Bleep blorp, bleep blorp, does not compute,” Fallon said as Trump.
Later in the program, Clinton attempted to relate more with the audience by laughing heartily and Fallon’s jokes, telling personal anecdotes and joking around about her email scandal. Clinton joked that the most classified emails on her server were about gefilte fish and Fallon joked that she should be commended for being a grandmother and knowing how to use email.
