Carney pines for Clinton years

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney spent a few minutes talking with CBS News’s Mark Knoller on the subject of austerity on Wednesday. Carney said that the White House longs for a return to the “golden era” of the Clinton years, when the economy was booming and national morale was high.

“That’s not the circumstance we inherited when we got here … It’s the circumstance we hope to get to, at least in terms of the balance between inflow and outflow,” Carney said. But when asked if “living within our means” would mean a balanced budget or something else, Carney didn’t offer a direct answer.
