President Obama on Sunday made a congratulatory call to Afghanistan’s newly elected president, Ashraf Ghani, and the runner-up, Abdullah Abdullah, who have agreed to a power-sharing deal.

“The President thanked Drs. Ghani and Abdullah for their leadership and willingness to partner to advance Afghanistan’s national interests,” the White House press office reported after the call.

Obama also “reaffirmed the United States’ strategic partnership with Afghanistan and commitment to continue its support to the new Afghan government,” during the call.

The country’s election commission on Sunday named Ghani the winner of the election. An audit of vote tallies conducted by the United Nations was not disclosed, fueling criticism of the election process.

The power-sharing deal was brokered by the United States. Abdullah is expected to serve alongside Ghani in a role similar to that of a prime minister.
