To this day, former CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric cannot believe how much attention she got for asking then-VP hopeful Sarah Palin what newspaper and magazines the Alaskan governor read. “It does kind of bug me when people remember only that question,” Couric admitted at Thursday’s session of the Atlantic’s Washington Ideas Forum.
Couric, who is now working on her syndicated ABC talk show, said the inquiry was spontaneous and she figured the exchange would just be used for background footage. “In television when you get B-roll of us walking and talking you sometimes just use material from there, but oftentimes it’s just for the shot of the two of us walking to voice over.”
Clearly that didn’t happen. “I still to this day don’t understand why she wouldn’t answer that question straight on,” Couric said, ticking off a number of ways the candidate could have answered the question. “I think she was done with me at that point.”
