The Republican opposition research super PAC America Rising is attacking the exorbitant price tag of Hillary Clinton’s policy proposals this weekend.
A slew of memos, infographics and tweets will begin circulating in Iowa as Clinton hits the State Fair in Des Moines. The GOP effort comes on the heels of her $350 billion “New College Compact” proposal on Monday. According to America Rising, Clinton’s proposed new spending totals nearly $600 billion.
Clinton will participate in the Iowa “wing ding” tonight along with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley. But she is one of the few candidates in either party to refrain from speaking on the Des Moines Register “Soap Box.” Instead she will go booth to booth chatting with Iowans, where she will be encouraged to sample state fair delicacies such as fried Coca Cola, mac ‘n’ cheese balls and pie on a stick. It should be noted that Clinton is on a strict diet for the duration of the campaign.
But the government won’t be if Clinton is elected, America Rising asserts. Since announcing her candidacy in April, Clinton has proposed a series of policy proposals that come at a hefty cost, such as $95.7 billion in expanded child care programs, $75 billion universal pre-kindergarten, $60 billion solar panel installation and a $10-20 billion profit sharing plan.
“Despite her husband’s claim nearly 2 decades ago that the ‘era of big government is over,’ Clinton is determined to tax and spend at such astonishing levels as to make that claim a punch line,” the ad reads. “American families simply can’t afford Hillary Clinton’s big government spending proposals.”
The funding for Clinton’s plans would come from limiting tax expenditures and deductions for high-income taxpayers, something that has proved politically difficult in the past. One such proposal by President Obama as a funding mechanism for Obamacare was voted down in 2009, attracting the opposition of 54 House Democrats.
