New poll shows 30 percent of Republicans pick Trump

A new poll shows business magnate Donald Trump with a commanding lead in the GOP field.

With less than a week to go before the first Republican debate, the results of a One America News Network national poll Friday found 30.8 percent of Republicans would pick Trump as their 2016 candidate for president.

In second place, nearly 20 percent behind, is former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at 13.3 percent, followed by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker at 12.5 percent. Former neurosurgeon Ben Carson was fourth, polling at 6.1 percent.

This falls in line with a number of recent polls that have put Trump on top, including a Quinnipiac poll released Thursday in which 20 percent of Republican voters said they would choose the real estate mogul as their primary candidate. Walker received 13 percent and Bush 10 percent. However, the Quinnipiac poll also showed that Trump trailed the three leading Democratic presidential candidates.

On the Democratic side, the One America News national poll results showed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton received triple the support than that of her nearest rival. When asked which 2016 Democratic candidate they would vote for today, 54.9 percent of Democrats picked Clinton. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders got 18.4 percent of the vote, followed by Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren at 9 percent and Vice President Joe Biden at 8 percent.

Neither Warren nor Biden have declared any intention of running for president in 2016.

The poll also asked about President Obama’s job performance. Fifty-two percent said they “disapprove” of his performance in the White House and 44 percent said they “approve.” Five percent were unsure.

The poll was conducted by Gravis Marketing on behalf of One America News. It conducted “a random survey of 1,535 registered voters across the U.S. regarding the presidential election,” according to a press release. The sample included 732 Republicans and 803 Democrats, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percent.
