CLEVELAND — Donald Trump Jr. used his primetime speaking slot here at the Republican National Convention half as a means to make the case for his father as the next president and the other half as an indictment of the Democratic Party.
Trump Jr. said that a key selling point for his father is his “unrelenting determination” both in business and in life and that quality would make him the most effective next president.
“I’ve seen it time and time again,” Trump Jr. said, “that look in his eyes when someone says it can’t be done. I saw that look a little over a year ago when he was told he couldn’t possibly succeed in politics. Yes, he did. For my father, impossible is just the starting point.”
He touted his celebrity father’s record in real estate and business, painting him as a visionary who hired and promoted workers based on their “common sense” and “street smarts.”
Trump Jr. said he and his siblings were beneficiaries of his father’s work ethic, having grown up on construction sites and learning from the “guys and gals” who worked with their hands.
Halfway through the speech he pivoted to attacks against liberal policies and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
He said that Democrats were “the party of risk” and accused them of wanting to “run everything from top down” by government overreach.
The elder Trump is scheduled to formally accept the party’s nominee on Thursday.
