HHS releases proposed Obamacare rule changes

The Obama administration proposed Friday numerous changes to the rules governing Obamacare.

The proposals include altering the dates of open enrollment and changing the way existing customers are automatically renewed into their healthcare plans, according to a document released Friday by the Department of Health and Human Services.

“Taken together, we believe these policies will ensure that consumers have access to high-quality, affordable health insurance,” the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said in a statement.

The proposed rule change would change the dates of open enrollment from the current Nov. 15-Feb. 15 to a window from Oct. 1-Dec. 15, which would allow customers to have new plans active by the first of the year.

The change to auto-renewal would create the option of defaulting into a lower priced plan. The current rules keep customers in the same plan if they take no action.
