A 30-year-old man who attempted to execute a Philadelphia policeman pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, and “confessed to this cowardly act,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said Friday.
The shooting incident occurred Thursday night. Police say the man fired 13 shots at the vehicle of Officer Jessie Harnett.
“He just came out of nowhere, and started firing,” Ross said Friday. Harnett was eventually able to fight and fire back.
Harnett is injured, but alive, and will need multiple surgeries.
Police have also released still images of a street camera that caught the attempted slaying.
Newly-inaugurated Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said Friday, “It’s terrible and it does not represent the religion [Islam] in any way, shape, or form,” ABC News reports.
