Against the backdrop of rising tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and North Korea’s latest nuclear test, the 2016 field is converging on Iowa. With less than a month to go until the caucuses, Republicans are actively seeking to tie the collapse of President Obama’s foreign policy to his former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton. Often, chaotic world affairs spell trouble for the party of the incumbent president.

Yet among Republicans, there are significant differences between the 2016 candidates when it comes to their approach to foreign policy. With a much more socially conservative Republican base, just how much will the issue of national security factor into the Iowa caucuses?
