House Speaker Paul Ryan encouraged Republicans to support Donald Trump and “bring the Clinton era to an end,” after learning on Sunday that FBI Director James Comey will stand by his original decision not to recommend charges against Hillary Clinton over her handling of classified material.
“Regardless of this decision, the undisputed finding of the FBI’s investigation is that Secretary Clinton put our nation’s secrets at risk and in doing so compromised our national security,” Ryan, R-Wis., said in a statement.
Ryan, who is currently campaigning for GOP congressional candidates across Wisconsin, said the Democratic presidential hopeful “believes she’s above the law and always plays by her own rules.”
“Fortunately, the American people have the opportunity to ensure Secretary Clinton never gets her hands on classified information again,” he continued. “Let’s bring the Clinton era to an end by voting for Donald Trump on Tuesday.”
In a letter to congressional committee chairs on Sunday, Comey said federal investigators stand by the “conclusions that we expressed in July with respect to Secretary Clinton” after reviewing additional emails from her unsecured server that surfaced last month on a device belonging to former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of top Clinton aide Huma Abedin.
“[T]he FBI investigative team has been working around the clock to process and review a large volume of emails from a device obtained in connection with an unrelated criminal investigation,” Comey noted in his letter.
Clinton and Trump are running neck-and-neck in a handful of crucial battleground states in the final 48 hours before Tuesday’s election. Ryan had planned to campaign with Trump in Wisconsin on Sunday, but the GOP nominee’s campaign cancelled the event at the last minute Saturday.
