ATLANTA (AP) — An Atlanta Republican plans to push a bill in the General Assembly that would allow parents in a public school to vote on whether their campus should be converted into an independent charter school.
Rep. Ed Lindsey promises that his bill also would allow either parents or teachers to hold referenda on whether a school’s administration should be replaced. But any decision about converting to a charter or firing a principal would ultimately be left up to the local school board.
That could become a flash point for school-choice advocates who want the votes to be binding. On the other side, the teachers lobby is poised to oppose the bill altogether.
Seven states have some version of the so-called “parent trigger” law.
Georgia lawmakers convene Monday for their annual session.
