Though pressure is mounting on NBC News to address anchorman Brian Williams’ false stories about having been aboard a U.S. military aircraft downed by enemy fire in Iraq, the Peacock Network is mostly quiet.
Williams delivered an on-air apology Wednesday evening for his claim, which he repeated publicly several times since 2003 until military witnesses disputed details of the story this week. And on MSNBC, “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski did cover the matter in a somber tone for five minutes but without the usual hot-topic commentary from show guests that the program is known for.
Otherwise, despite reports that NBC News is standing behind Williams, the network is silent.
One national politics reporter at NBC News told the Washington Examiner media desk that as far as the politics team is concerned, it is business as usual. Asked if the Williams episode has come up at NBC, she said, “Not really. I’m holed up with the politics team and so it hasn’t really come up. Can’t speak for the rest of the network.”
An NBC News spokeswoman did not return a request for comment.
