Donald Trump’s decision not to visit Israel later this month was a good one, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on Thursday.
“I think that most people are relieved that he’s reconsidered,” Earnest said when asked if he thought Trump’s move was smart. “He’s obviously a private citizen so he can travel anywhere that he wants … but the situation in Israel is particularly volatile; so I think in this case, his decision to reconsider that trip, is a good decision for all those involved.”
Trump postponed the Dec. 28 trip shortly after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Trump’s suggestion to ban Muslims from the United States. Israeli media had reported Trump was planning on meeting with Netanyahu during the visit, though Trump later denied it.
Netanyahu is probably among those grateful for the real estate mogul’s itinerary change, Earnest said.
Netanyahu “had his own concerns to express about Mr. Trump’s recent comments,” Earnest said.
When asked whether Trump’s controversial plans and remarks hurt the Republican Party and bolster Democrats’ chances, Earnest said that although he has poked fun at the reality TV star, “I take no delight in his continued strength in the polls.”
