On Tuesday at the National Press Club, Toby Keith was asked to conclude his remarks with a few bars of “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.”
“No, I don’t want to sing today,” he said. “We’re on C-Span [and] you can’t sing on C-SPAN.”
In fact, singing on C-SPAN would have put Keith in good company. Among those who have carried a tune on the cable network:
* former Republican Leader Bob Michel, in a musical segment entitled “A Day in the Life of Bob Michel.”
* The Singing Senators, made up of ex-Sens. Larry Craig, Trent Lott, Jim Jeffords and John Ashcroft.
* The members of Congress singing “God Bless America” on the Capitol steps on 9/11.
* The recent 2008 Hannukah reception at the White House, in which President George W. Bush told the human beat box, “Nice job on the drums.”
* And, in recent months at the Press Club, Dolly Parton and Billy Joel.
