CBS’s Bob Schieffer: ‘It’s possible’ for Trump to win it all

It’s possible for Donald Trump to expand his appeal enough that he wins the general election and becomes president, said veteran CBS news anchor Bob Schieffer.

The former “Face the Nation” moderator said Wednesday on CBS that Trump will face the challenging task of broadening his support beyond white voters, but said it can be done.

“Trump’s problem is going to be it is very difficult for anybody with the demographics of the electorate as it is today to win when you basically appeal to white people,” he said. “There just aren’t enough white people to do that anymore… He’s got to find a way to broaden his appeal. But I think it’s possible, I think he might actually — I didn’t think it was possible before. Now I do.”

National polls show Trump performing well among white men, but he faces steep unfavorability numbers when it comes to women, black and Latino voters.

Trump repeatedly says, though, that he expects to overcome his unpopularity with a promise to “bring jobs back,” a message that he presumably believes would resonate among low-income minority voters who have struggled the most in the economic recovery.
