Vice President Joe Biden’s son, Beau, dies

Beau Biden, attorney general of Delaware from 2007 to 2015 and son of Vice President Joe Biden, died Saturday after battling brain cancer, said Biden in a statement.

“The entire Biden family is saddened beyond words,” Biden said in a statement Saturday. “We know that Beau’s spirit will live on in all of us — especially through his brave wife, Hallie, and two remarkable children, Natalie and Hunter.”

Beau Biden, 46, had been diagnosed with brain cancer in August 2013 and after successful treatment, had a recurrence and was hospitalized this week at Walter Reed Medical Center in Maryland.

“Michelle and I are grieving tonight. Beau Biden was a friend of ours. His beloved family — Hallie, Natalie, and Hunter — are friends of ours. And Joe and Jill Biden are as good as friends get,” President Obama said in a statement Saturday.

“Beau took after Joe. He studied the law, like his dad, even choosing the same law school. He chased a life of public service, like his dad, serving in Iraq and as Delaware’s Attorney General. Like his dad, Beau was a good, big-hearted, devoutly Catholic and deeply faithful man, who made a difference in the lives of all he touched — and he lives on in their hearts,” the president said.

“Joe is one of the strongest men we’ve ever known,” Obama said.

Beau Biden served with the Delaware National Guard and was a veteran of the Iraq war. He planned a run for governor in 2016, he said last year.

Beau is survived by his wife, Hallie, and their two children, Natalie and Hunter.
