Ted Cruz appears to be channeling Gov. Scott Walker’s messaging while on the campaign trail in Wisconsin.
In Janesville on Thursday, the Texas senator emphasized that the election will come down to three things, “jobs, freedom, and security.” Cruz has made the point throughout his campaign, but it sounded familiar in the Badger State where the governor campaigned for president on three nearly synonymous issues, growth, reform, and safety (Walker’s word for security).
When Walker began his short-lived campaign last summer in Waukesha, he ran on the theme of a “fighter who wins.” On Friday, the Cruz campaign uploaded a series of new ads online, including one touting Cruz as an “Every Day Fighter.” The ad features a man working in an auto-shop while a narrator touts Cruz as the principled choice in comparison to Donald Trump.
“Donald Trump’s empty promises won’t cut it, the next president needs to be a principled leader with a real plan to turn things around and help every family in this town,” a narrator says. “Ted Cruz is that principled leader.”
The Cruz campaign also published two other 30-second spots promoting Cruz’s agenda, including a tax plan that will “bring jobs back from China.” The ads target blue-collar voters that Trump has successfully captured in other states.
Cruz has spent much of the week campaigning in Wisconsin, and touted the state’s upcoming primary as one that could alter the course of the 2016 presidential race. Republicans will vote in the Wisconsin primary on April 5.
