The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the three attacks that rocked Brussels Tuesday morning.
The attacks — two at Zaventem airport and another on the subway near the European Union Headquarters — left at least 34 dead and 170 more injured.
“Islamic State fighters carried out a series of bombings with explosive belts and devices on Tuesday, targeting an airport and a central metro station,” the Amaq agency, which is affiliated with the terror group, said in a statement.
Reuters first reported the news.
“Islamic State fighters opened fire inside Zaventem Airport, before several of them detonated their explosive belts, as a martyrdom bomber detonated his explosive belt in the Maalbeek metro station,” Amaq also said.
Belgian Federal Prosecutor Frederic Van Leeuw confirmed that their airport explosions at 8 a.m. local time were carried out by a suicide bomber. At around 9:10 a.m., another blast hit Laelbeek station in the city center. According to Brussels Mayor Yvan Mayeur, the bomb on the subway train killed 20 and injured over 100.
